Business in Northampton.

 - Northampton is a large market town that was originally the major centre for shoemaking and other leather industries. It is located in the East Midlands region of England and being around 67 miles north-west of London it is in an ideal location for industry. Northampton has a population of 205,000 which it makes it the third largest town that does not have official city status. This area of the East Midlands is extremely populous; and in recent years over 200 companies (including ones from overseas) have made Northampton their home including many web design companies.

As mentioned before, Northampton was the main area of industry for shoemaking and other leather industries, and during the 20th century World Wars the town supplied most of the boots to the British armed forces. A lot of the old shoe factories still remain in the town, the majority of which have now been converted into offices or accommodation. Nowadays due to its optimum geographical location, Northampton is home to some big name companies such as Avon Cosmetics, Coca Cola Schweppes and National Panasonic. These private-sector employers are mainly in the field of distribution and finance rather than manufacturing. This is a departure from the old heritage of Northampton but shows it as a town it is able to adapt to new ways of industry. The prime location of Northampton ensures that it will continue to be popular with British and overseas companies alike.

The University of Northampton is also a major employer in the area and prides itself on being one of the leading regional, national, international centres for research and knowledge transfer. As an institution the university also strives to benefit the overall well-being of the area both socially and economically, and provides professional research and knowledge transfers for businesses in the area. As the town has an excellent research basis thanks to the work of the university, entrepreneurial students are encouraged and supported to set up their own Internet businesses meaning that new web companies are popping up all over. And with a wealth of already established companies existing in Northampton, students have access to lots of useful knowledge and experience that they can use in their favour when building up a successful business. It is clear that it will continue to grow in wealth and size in the coming years.

During the 20th century the M1 motorway and rail links to London were built and this helped to turn the town into a commuter town to the capital. The population grew as a result of this and more and more houses were built. Northampton is also accessible to the East Midlands Airport and Luton Airport which encourages traffic into the centre. The accessibility of the town is a major advantage for big companies who specialise in distribution and its proximity to the capital is ideal for creating more business. Northampton is also home to many restaurants, bars and clubs which is perfect for the student community and for encouraging people from other local areas. Northampton is an ever-expanding town that has a wealth of business experience behind it and is a perfect setting for new and existing businesses looking for a place to relocate to. You only have to look at the success of internet companies in the area to see that Northampton has a lot of potential to fulfil then needs of an expanding company.
